The titular character was originally a mercenary named Al Simmons who died and went to hell but was granted new life and decided to use powers bestowed on him by Malebolgia to do some good finally. The book was a huge hit, an early success for Image Comics, which McFarlane also co owned. Spawn's success only continued as the franchise grew to include a hit movie, a cartoon, and, of
